Gora Pakora no more!

I went to the Asian Wedding exhibition on Saturday. FA’s getting hitched and IN had been bugging me go and since my plans for that day had been cancelled I went. We had fun.
Part of the exhibition was a fashion show which was great and incredibly well done!
There were a bunch of women at the front who would start screaming when certain models came on to the catwalk…..was soooo embarrassing! SB said there were also some hijaabis who would whoop, I didn’t know where to hide! What is wrong with ppl! It’s bad enough when hijaabis do it at Sami Yusuf!
Talking of models there was a really funny incident but I will have to email you guys that story!
And that was a bizarre thing as well; there were soooooo many Bengalis there? It seemed like the usual green street shoppers decided to come to Wembley that day instead!
Guess what I even swallowed my mehendi inhibitions and had my mehendi done (well I had just been called gora pakora one too many times that day!).  Have to admit it wasn’t as bad as I imagined it to be. The lady who did my mehendi was incredibly sweet. I think mehendi just reminds me off when we were little and our bhabhi used to put mehendi on us without fail every Eid. We would have a big spot in the palm of our hands surrounded by tens of smaller spots. If that wasn’t bad enough we would then be paraded in front of the class to show off our ‘pretty designs’ on our hands. (We were pretty much the only Asians at our primary school) HB and KB can attest too all this.
Now every Eid when my young niece shows off her mehendi to me (yes my bhabhi still hasn’t changed her design!) it makes me cringe for her. She still thinks it cool of course.
I showed mother my mehendi, I think she was secretly pleased that I was showing signs of ‘culture’.

  • to add to the mendi nostalgia jay do you remember how the mendi used to always turn out this bright orange colour and in school the kids thought we had some weird disease!!

  • Yeh! I still remember poor Naz was caught in the bathroom scrubbing his hands red raw in vain trying to rid him self of the bright orange disease. Even now, nice clean hands looks much better than having the orange stuff.
